Mrs Diane Moon had a very extreme - and unique - reason for getting a Sliderobes unit...
She gave birth in her en-suite bathroom while her husband Nigel delivered the baby with help from 999 experts over the phone.“Our second son was born at home, in the en-suite off the bedroom, with my husband delivering it. But we hadn’t planned it like that! Because it was our second we hadn’t felt any need to get to the hospital too early, and we thought we had loads of time. But then the baby started having his own ideas.
“Needless to say, afterwards we had to get the en-suite and bedroom redecorated, and so I said to my husband, don’t forget the wardrobe too!”
Creating for unusual spaces
The Moon family – Diane and Nigel, together with their toddler son and baby boy - have lived in their beautiful detached stone-built cottage, which dates from the mid 17th century, for seven years now.
“When we moved from London we brought our king size bed with us, but the wardrobe that was there had doors that opened out against the bed, so there wasn’t much space.
“We also have a vaulted high ceiling and lots of beams, so we knew we had to have something that was made to measure.
“We spoke to other retailers but when it came to it they just couldn’t do it to fit the space. Whereas the designers at Sliderobes said ‘yes, we can do it.’”
The couple then started working with the designer at the Nottingham branch to ensure that the Sliderobes unit could be fitted under their high pointed ceiling.
Grand designs
Diane and Nigel have been doing up their house room-by-room over the years, but the unexpectedly sudden birth of their new baby meant that the bedroom was now a priority.
“Although the house is old, dating from the 17th century, it’s a mix of traditional and modern inside. When it came to choosing the design of the Sliderobes, we didn’t want ultra-modern but we didn’t want old fashioned either.”
The couple opted for a mix of mirror with a tobacco walnut wood finish for their four-door unit. The mirror runs across the middle with the wood featuring horizontally along the top and bottom.
“It does look quite contemporary, but it shouldn’t date,” says Diane.
“We had loads of choice and I would have had great fun had we lived in a modern house and gone for something quite funky.”
Odd angles and high ceilings
Because of the height and shape of the ceiling, the unit needed angled doors at each end, with two straight doors in the middle.
“The amazing thing is that the new Sliderobes takes up less of a footprint than the previous wardrobe but we’ve got a massive amount of shelving and storage space. We can get all our clothes in it, whereas before we had the Sliderobes we had our clothes and shoes spread over different wardrobes in other rooms.”
And because the doors slide, there’s no more threat of wardrobe doors banging into their king size bed the way the old wardrobe doors used to.
Diane was particularly impressed by a couple of questions the designer asked her and by the attention-to-detail he showed.
“He had asked to look inside our current wardrobe so he knew how we used the space, rather than impose a space onto us. Then he asked me to show him my longest full-length dress, so he would know exactly how much hanging space was required which I thought was quite clever.”
Done in one day
When Diane was told that the fitting would take just one day she found it hard to believe. But that’s exactly what happened, everything was fitted out apart from the two angled doors at each end of the unit which came a week later.
The designer had to wait until the unit had been fitted before measuring everything again as the doors were made to measure and so they had to fit exactly.
Satisfied customers
“For the price we were expecting it to be good,” says Diane of the finished product. “But it totally exceeded our expectations. We’re so glad we went with Sliderobes.”
