The Quinn family turned to Sliderobes when they realised that they had so much space, they didn't know how to fill it.
Mal Quinn and his wife Aisling live with their new born baby daughter in a modern four-bedroom detached home in Dublin. The house was built around 2007 and the couple have lived there for two years. It was a good sized house with a large attic space, but, says Mal: “In my head I knew I wanted to do something with it.”
With a need for a spacious home office and knowing that as the family grows they’ll need more storage space, Mal and Aisling weren’t afraid to make some major changes. After extensive renovations to their home, the couple have added an extra story, to what is now a three story house, totally renovating the former attic space.
The Brief
The rooms where the Sliderobes have been installed include a master bedroom with brightly coloured glass combinations featuring a wardrobe with blue, orange and mirrored glass plus free-standing furniture finished to match, including a set of drawers in blue and white glass and two bedside lockers both boasting orange glass and blue glass. The refurbishment also included a dressing room with a five-door white glass wardrobe, with one complete mirror door, finished to match Sliderobes’ white and fuchsia glass products. The dressing room also features a set of drawers, in fuchsia pink glass with white glass on top. The former attic, which now contains a home office, boasts 3 wardrobes in black glass with a mirrored stripe across the middle of each, and 4 doors on each, brought to life with dramatic lighting and up-lighting throughout the room.
The Space
The master bedroom provided no irregular shapes and since the house was less than a decade old, there was no problem with misshapen and old walls, such as you can find in a very old house. With a whole extra storey to enjoy in their home thanks to the attic renovation, finding the space wasn’t an issue for the family. It was what to do with it that mattered. “What I’d had in mind originally for the attic wasn’t practical to do,” explains Mal. “So that idea had to be changed around with the help of Karen the designer and we’re delighted with the end result.”
The Solution
Because Mal’s original idea wasn’t suitable for the space, the couple sat down with designer Karen Conway, from Sliderobes’ Dublin branch, to re-think how they could fill the space that used to be their attic. The renovation of the attic involved the creation of new walls, so they waited until the walls were semi-finished before Karen really got to grips with the area, taking measurements and working out the different options in terms of what could be done there. “We sat down with Karen one afternoon and went through it all,” says Mal. “She had it all on the computer and so we were able to see the room layout and different design options that were possible. By this stage the builders had most of the work done so it was easier to see how everything could fit in. In the wardrobes, we wanted mostly hanging space although shoe space and shelving was also important and I liked the idea of a tie rack. In the attic, there was space above the wardrobe for cubby holes, underneath the eaves, and that made good use of that space. We really did get everything we wanted. We went for quite bold and dramatic colours throughout including blue and orange, as we thought there were a great variety of options to choose from. The help that Karen gave us really made life easier too. We are so happy with it all we wouldn’t change a thing.”
The Verdict
“We’d always looked at Sliderobes and in fact almost got them installed in another house,” explains Mal on the decision to choose Sliderobes. “We really liked the quality and so we requested a brochure. When it came to having the work carried out they put their best fitter on the job and he did all of the work in five days. The after-service was really fantastic too. At one point a mirrored door was delivered that had a tiny scratch on it. I didn’t even think much of it, you wouldn’t even have seen it unless you really went up close to look at it, but they insisted on coming out and replacing it. It’s that attention to detail that we found really impressive.”
