The house that needed a lot of work

by Andrea McVeigh in Customer Stories on 10 January 2014

When Mr & Mrs Robertson of Suffolk moved house 18 months ago, they knew that some work needed to be done to their new home, an 80-year-old detached, six-bedroom home.

“The house needed a lot doing to it,” explains Mr Robertson, “and so we’ve been gradually going through the house, room by room, starting with the main bedroom and dressing room. “We had been driving through Cambridge and happened to see the Sliderobes showroom there. We knew we wanted some sort of storage and work done so we went to have a look and we were impressed with the products.

“The staff there told us that their branch didn’t service our area but we were advised to get in touch with the Ipswich branch.”

After getting their first Sliderobes unit, for their dressing room, they were so pleased with the results that when it came to renovating two other rooms in the house, they called on the Ipswich Sliderobesbranch again.

Three solutions for three different spaces

The couple now have three different Sliderobes storage solutions for three different areas in their house - a dressing room, their bathroom and their landing.

In the dressing room the couple opted for a conventional wardrobe with three doors.

This was the first room to be renovated, and the work was completed in January 2012.  The couple were happy with the results and the workmanship, and so when it came to working on the bathroom a few months later, they again called on designer Ben Firbank.

In the bathroom, it was just a case of putting in two sliding doors, as the carcass was there already.  Here they chose a pure white look, with frame-less doors.  The unit is used like an airing cupboard with useful storage space.

Once that work had been carried out, they moved onto the space in the landing.

The creative process

On the landing, the large Sliderobes unit features a glass door in the middle while the two outside doors are in cream.  It is used as a large airing cupboard but it also houses the water heating system, so it had to be made large enough to incorporate that.

“We knew we had to do something about the landing cupboard that was there, and having done the other two rooms the decision to ask Sliderobes to do the landing was easily made,” explains Mr Robertson.

The original cupboard was ripped out and the new Sliderobes built specifically to make the best use of the space, having to be built out to give greater depth to the cupboards.

Working together with the designer

“Ben from the Ipswich branch was very good,” says Mr Robertson.

“He came to the house several times and brought samples and that helped us in making our selections.  But we found it equally helpful to go to the branch and see the products there.

“We like to have lots of choice.  In the dressing room, the colour scheme was predominantly blue so we chose blue for the outside doors and a mirrored door for the middle of the wardrobe.”

Satisfied customers

“We’re not sure if we will need any more wardrobe or cupboard units in the rest of the house, but we would go back to Sliderobes if the need arose,” says Mr Robertson.

"The standard of installation workmanship was excellent. At the same time, they were very responsive and willing to correct things very satisfactorily, if need be.  There were a couple of occasions on which things had to be changed, which they did willingly and professionally.”
