With kitchens rapidly becoming the primary social and eating area in most contemporary homes, the idea of having a room set aside for the purpose of dining has largely fallen out of favour.
But if you have gone to the effort of making a delicious meal, and wish to enjoy it in a space that is cosy, elegant and perhaps a little more formal, you may struggle to do this in your kitchen.
If you are lucky enough to have sufficient space, you could still keep your kitchen a social area by incorporating a couple of small sofas, instead of a huge table. Then make your designated room into the place where you actually eat and hey presto – your kitchen will still be the heart of the family home, where everyone can meet socially, and you can move into the dining room for your meal. Nor should your dining room be some hallowed sanctum reserved exclusively for meals. It can also double up as a quiet study or a place for doing homework in peace.
The room’s decor can reflect the style and theme of your other rooms. For example, if the minimalist look is your thing, then go for a plain glass table and modern chairs. If you prefer a more traditional decor, heavy curtains, dark woods, gilt and gold finishes all exude opulence. Wallpaper is definitely part of the elegant dining room’s theme; painted walls may seem a little flat in comparison. If it is a small room, restrict the use of wallpaper to a feature wall only. For extra drama, consider fitting a picture rail or dado – panelling even. Underfoot, a wooden floor wins in practical terms.
If you would like to have a separate dining space but you don’t have a spare reception room in the house, you may consider building a conservatory. Not only is it an affordable way to include a bespoke eating area, but everyone will also get a great view of your garden when enjoying their meal. Kitchen-diners may be in vogue but let’s champion the return of the dining room.
