How would you define art? The dictionary calls art a product of human creativity; a process of arranging elements that provoke emotion and affect our senses.
Or there’s Oscar Wilde’s definition. He said art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has ever known. Most of us might not consider ourselves artists, yet there is a bit of art in everything we do. If art affects our senses, then there is a slice of creativity in all that we see, taste, hear, smell and touch.
Whether it is the cd playing in the car, a book you’re reading or the decor in your living room, we all control a degree of the colour, light, sound and design that surrounds us daily.
The best thing about art is its subjective nature. If we all had the same tastes, life would be boring and every symphony would sound the same.
And art isn’t about perfection. Dilbert comic creator Scott Adams said, “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.”
Think about interior design. When you walk into someone’s home, you get a sense of their lifestyle. Their use of space and sense of style is often a window into their personality, which could explain why some of us redecorate so often!
Design is individual and, with the internet at our disposal, anything is possible. Bespoke furniture and bespoke art can be custom-made to fit any room or personality. We might not be the one with the artistic know-how, but designers who can do it for us have never been so accessible.
So go for it. Get creative and think of artful solutions that compliment your creative nature.
