Conservatories are no longer for the conservative-minded. With the advances of modern day technology and innovative designs, conservatories can have any look or fulfil any function you desire.
These home additions have come a long way from the first non-glazed structures that were used to store food. Scientists, nobility and landed gentry took the concept a step further and built glazed structures to protect and contain precious plants, seeds and vegetation.
The oldest recorded conservatory dates from the 17th century and John Nash designed four conservatories for Buckingham Palace in 1825. The trend of adding a room that traps the sun trap began to catch on. These special rooms were earmarked in classic British novels such as Jane Austen’s “Emma” and Oscar Wilde’s “The Picture of Dorian Grey”.
Unfortunately, many of the conservatories built in the Victorian era fell into disrepair from frost and rust. But new technology like double-glazing, self-cleaning windows, solar glass and under floor heating has created a huge resurgence in the popularity on the conservatory – and they aren’t just for growing flowers anymore.
It’s estimated that 1 in 4 homes in the UK have added to their living area by constructing conservatories. This extra space can be used as a dining room, family room, playroom, bedroom or even a kitchen extension.
In this economic climate, many homeowners are opting to invest in home improvements instead of moving house. A conservatory is a smart choice and can increase the value of a home as it adds an energy efficient living space that requires minimum maintenance and is aesthetically appealing. Most conservatories don’t even require planning permission though it’s a good idea to check building regulations with local authorities.
The sky is the limit when designing your conservatory. The decor should reflect its function as well as your sense of style. Add bursts of colours in cushions and planters or go for a rustic look with wooden flooring and brick walls. Rattan furniture will give the room a country feel or decorate with vintage for a shabby chic effect.
Whether the room is used as a utility room, family room or a sophisticated nook to entertain guests, consider a storage solution that will tie in with the design and style of your conservatory.
