Declutter your wardrobe

by Andrea McVeigh in DIY & Home Improvement on 16 April 2013

A place for everything and everything in its place. How often have you heard that mantra and liked the theory behind it, but just weren't sure how to put it into practice?

It’s like being told ‘a tidy desk is a tidy mind’ - it sounds good, but when you’re faced with a pile of papers, bills, Post-It notes and empty chocolate wrappers (or is that last bit just me?) then it’s hard to know where to start.

If you want to know how to declutter, start off small. Don’t overwhelm yourself with an impossible task. Take baby steps and start with your wardrobe.

You may not think of your wardrobe as worthy of a declutter - after all, everything is shoved out of sight behind doors. But sorting it out can be the first step in creating a calmer, more organised lifestyle for yourself.

Clutter develops because people often can’t make decisions about what to throw out and what to keep, so everything gets kept and that includes clothes and accessories, especially when memories are tied up in outfits - that dress you wore to your sister’s wedding or the fab trousers from your first date.

But you can still keep the memory while donating the clothes to charity. Think about why you are keeping certain clothes - are you really likely to wear them again or do you just like the memories associated with them?

By making a decision as to whether or not each item stays or goes, you are training yourself to look at the value of it, deciding whether or not you want to keep it in your life.

I had to learn the hard way - my wardrobe was stuffed with outfits that I hadn’t worn in years, so in order to snap up all those new season trends I wanted, I had to make room for them.

That meant getting creative and organising my space better (socks and tights in one drawer, T-shirts in another and a rail devoted to skirts and dresses with another just for trousers and a third for tops and jackets).

I was lucky in that, when I moved into my house nine years ago, there was a Sliderobes wardrobe already in place (thank you, previous owners!). So that meant there was lots of wardrobe storage, such as a shoe rack and a tie/belt rack, already in place.

In fact, with Sliderobes interiors and accessories you need never suffer from wardrobe clutter again, with items such as the interior trouser rail (you can hang up trousers properly, rather than roll them up in a ball!) and the front-to-back moveable hanging rail.

It’s these sort of walk-in wardrobe accessories, plus products such as the ingenious Sliderobes pull down hanging rail, which allows you to utilise all the space in your wardrobe rather than let it go to waste (it’s also great for people with mobility difficulties as well as older folk), that will make wardrobe clutter a thing of the past.

Other wardrobe solutions include Sliderobes soft close wire baskets (to hold your T-shirts and jumpers in so you can still see them) that extend out on ball bearing runners, and the brilliant LED hanging rail light, which turns on when you slide open the doors - no more fumbling around for that cardigan you want on cold, dark winter mornings!

Once you get organised you’ll find that it takes less time to find items and when you get the basics out of the way - getting rid of clothes you no longer wear and organising the rest according to groups (socks, underwear, tops, skirts, shirts, trousers etc) - you’ll learn to love your wardrobe again.
