Feng shui your bedroom

by Andrea McVeigh in DIY & Home Improvement on 14 September 2012

Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of harmonising the flow of energy, or 'chi', throughout your home to create a healthy, happy and harmonious environment For most of us, the bedroom is the one room in the house that is most in need of help, especially if you suffer from sleep or relationship problems. There’s no scientific data behind claims about the feng shui home, and you don’t need to stress out about not having the perfect feng shui bedroom - just do what you can, where you can.

At the very least, these tips will help to make your bedroom a more relaxing, comfortable place to be in, and that in itself will be restful.

Your first step should be to declutter your bedroom. Also, avoid having a TV, computer or any exercise equipment in there as these can suck energy away from the main purpose of your bedroom as being a room to sleep in.

Here are more feng shui tips that could help you sleep better and may even pep up your love life.

Feng shui bedroom colours - Choose warm skin tone shades, depending on your own particular skin tone of course - anything from beige, peach or cream to tan or cocoa. Other colours that are said to be restful include light blues, greens and lavenders. Avoid stark colour contrasts, such as black and white, and cold colours, such as grey, ice blue or white.

Feng shui mirrors - Mirrors play an important role in feng shui as they are said to bounce energy around the room, causing confusion, and can magnify worries. According to feng shui, don’t place a mirror on the wall above your bed, opposite your bed, or next to your bed. When you’re lying in bed, the idea is that you shouldn’t be able to see a reflection of yourself.

Feng shui beds - The best position for a bed is in the corner of the bedroom, diagonally opposite the door. Don’t have the bed in a direct line facing the door, and if it’s a double bed, make sure there’s space on either side for accessibility. The head of the bed should be against a wall, not a window, as it’s thought that energy can enter or leave through the window, causing restless sleep.
