Does your home have gadget overload? No doubt, we can't live without modern technology. Who could go a day without checking emails, surfing Sky or curling up in bed with a laptop or iPad? Letting my mobile run out of charge is as catastrophic as running out of petrol.
And there’s the appliance haven we call the kitchen. With gadgets that can grind it, boil it, bake it and puree it into a smoothie, we have to anticipate some serious cabinet clutter.
If we aren’t careful, these modern conveniences could overtake the mood of our home. We may live happily with an endless stream of wires and give up serious wall space for flat screen televisions, but we can’t let the practicalities of technology rule the roost.
The key is balance. If we can blend our modern lifestyle into cosy surroundings, we create a haven where we can relax and unwind.
Here are a few ideas to tip the balance in your favour:
1.Consider colour. Don’t let technology bog you down in black and beige. Add some warmth with splashes of colour. Whether you paint an accent wall, buy some funky rugs or experiment with textures, these colourful touches will personalise your place.
2.Play with patterns. Nothing brightens a room more than intriguing eye candy. Introduce different patterns with cushions, curtains, couch and bed coverings. Get creative and mark your territory.
3.Put some personality into storage space. Bespoke storage solutions can add pizzazz to a room and hide all the clutter. Custom-built designs can fit around unusual nooks and crannies in any room. It’s a win-win for style and function.
4.If you surround yourself with the things you love, whether it’s a vintage clock or your granny’s china, you won’t sacrifice cosy for contemporary.
