Micro fashion trends

by Andrea McVeigh in Trends on 8 February 2013

They're the mini fashion trends you can afford to indulge in - those 'of the moment' items that you need to snap up now. Any one of them will add an instant update to your wardrobe and show that you have the finger on the pulse of fashion.

They’re the style trends that are big right now, but who knows whether we’ll still be wearing them in a few month's time. So don’t splash your cash too much - make a micro-trend budget and stick to it, but have fun with these fashion hits while you’re at it.

Slipper shoes - Yes, they look like the sort of slippers a crown prince of Europe would lounge around his palace in, but these aren’t for bedtime. Also known as smoking shoes, they’re the ‘new ballet pump’ and as comfortable and practical as they are stylish. It helps that, like ballet pumps, you can slip them on and off, but they’re a bit more androgynous than ballet flats, so they’re the ideal cross between a pump and a loafer. Get a pair with studs in them and you’ve nailed two trends in one. They’re also keepers - expect to see lots more of them come 2013.

Tweed - Move over Miss Marple, tweed is having a fashion moment. Harris Tweed from Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, has popped up in collections from Topman, Next and Clarks shoes this season. Both Doctor Who star Matt Smith and the rapper Tinie Tempah are fans, and you’ll even see tweed being used in brands as iconic as Dr Martens boots and Converse trainers. Don’t wear tweed head-to-toe though, or you’ll end up looking like a 1950s librarian, but a tweed handbag or a pair of Clarks loafers will prove that you’re fashion forward enough to embrace your inner Agatha Christie sleuth.

Cossack hats - Sales of these winter warmers are up everywhere from M&S to River Island, and some trend-watchers have put it down to the popularity of this year’s filmed adaptation of Anna Karenina, starring Keira Knightley. With a Russian-style Cossack hat, you can do away with the need for ear muffs, so it’s practical, warm and uber-stylish too.

Studded ankle boots - the ankle boot has always been a favourite fashion staple, so it wasn’t surprising that this year’s stud craze made it all the way down to footwear. Studs add a pop of punk to any outfit and combined with a trusty black ankle boot, in either leather or suede, you can literally step out in style. The big name design houses, including Burberry and Christian Louboutin have embraced the trend, but you can keep it budget with a pair from Primark instead.
