Embellishment and adornment have their place, but not when it means that both your interior space and your wardrobes are swamped with too many ornaments, knick knacks and accessories. So clear out your clutter and embrace a 'less is more' approach when it comes to both interior design and fashion.
The modern mood is all about sleek lines, space and elegance - after all, no-one wants to become a slave to their stuff. We want to be able to enjoy our clothes and homes, not become overwhelmed by them. So remember, it’s all about minimalism over maximalism and elegance over adornment.
In terms of interiors, choose modern design furniture, and bedroom furniture in particular, that is both practical and that also looks chic and contemporary. Ideally, you want to have plenty of storage space behind those fitted wardrobes. A place for everything, and everything in its place should be your motto.
That doesn’t mean that you have to get rid of all your belongings, it’s more about displaying the items that are important to you and enjoying a calming interior, which in turn will help you appreciate the time you spend at home. We all know the saying ‘a tidy desk is a tidy mind’, well modern minimalism is all about keeping a tidy home in order to enjoy it more and also to enjoy better peace of mind too.
A built-in wardrobe can hide a multitude of sins behind sliding wardrobe doors, from fashion mistakes to a serious shoe obsession, but from the outside no-one would ever know. Modern bedroom furniture is all about emphasising a sleek Scandinavian or Japanese approach to design - no unnecessary details, just a calm, soothing atmosphere. And you’re likely to sleep better in a tidy, orderly room featuring contemporary bedroom furniture, rather than lying awake, stressed out and surrounded by clutter and mess, out-of-date furniture and hand-me-downs from relatives. And a minimalist interior will make dusting and vacuuming easier too.
When it comes to clothes, the less is more ethos is equally important. High quality tailoring, flattering lines and pared-down outfits have taken the place of frills, flounces and unnecessary accessories on the catwalk and in boutiques. Designers including Stella McCartney and Victoria Beckham are just two of the designers who showcase sleek silhouettes and a restrained approach to adornment - and the fashion pack love them for it.
