Are you sitting comfortably? Whether it's a couch, divan or settee, our social and sedentary lives have centred on sofas for more than 2000 years.
As usual, it all started with the trend-setting Egyptians. The earliest sofa dates back to about 2000 BC when this lap of luxury was reserved for a Pharaoh or royalty. The word sofa comes from the Arabic word suffah, or bench. Not to be outdone by their Egyptian predecessors, the Romans designed lush lounging chairs and elaborately carved stone benches. Plush carpets and colourful tapestries adorned this furniture and nearby flooring. It offered Roman’s elite a warm, comfortable place to unwind.
Now there’s a sofa in most homes and sofa surfing has become one of our favourite past-times. Data shows that the average person spends 3 to 4 hours a day watching television. For most people, this means they are literally attached to their sofas for more than 20% of their waking hours. So it stands to reason that buying a couch may be one of the biggest expenses and decisions you make about your home.
There’s always the cut-price route. Mass manufacturing can crank out cheap and cheerful self-build furniture by the truckload. But remember the golden rule of furniture...you get what you pay for. Cheap plywood or chipboard options lose their identity in a budget-driven society. Materials don’t have the durability and longevity of custom-made, bespoke furniture. The bottom line is that discounted furniture isn’t built to last and constantly replacing it could cost more money in the long run.
It pays to buy something that will last. A good sofa is made of hardwood frames, metal springs, proper filling and just the right fabric. It may cost more initially, but think of the time and memories you’ll have spending sofa time with family and friends.
And if you’re concerned about styles, the sky’s the limit. Sofa design has taken form and function to a new level. Classics like the chesterfield and sectional will never go out of style, nor will the nostalgic look of an ornamental canapé or semi-backless fainting couch. But if you want to break away from tradition, your sofa can be as funky or functional as you want it to be.
There are sofas that look like a comfortable wave and those that light up the night. Some are multifunctional and combine bookcases and drink holders while others have built in loveseats, ottomans and recliners. There’s even a sofa that climbs the wall.
Just like a Sliderobes storage solution, a good sofa will adapt to the changes in your lifestyle. Exceptional furniture not only stands the test of time, it also acclimatises to new surroundings. With Sliderobes, it’s as easy as replacing the doors. For sofas, simply make a few subtle adjustments such as throw pillows, blankets or even a new fabric to make it match a new decor.
Sofa sense doesn’t apply just to the living room anymore. Many homes have sofas in the kitchen, study or even an office or bedroom. This seating encourages interaction and, if it’s a daybed or futon, it even gives you an extra bed for guests.
