Spring/Summer beauty trends

by Andrea McVeigh in Trends on 1 March 2013

I've got lipsticks in every shade, dozens of eyeshadows and enough nail polish to paint the outside of a house. But when the new season beauty trends come in, and I can't wait to get my hands on them

Beauty trends in 2013 include naked nails - not lacquer-free nails but nude-look talons. It’s a move away from the OTT crackle nails and nail wrap trend we saw last season - think shades of latte, taupe, cream and beige.

But while nails are toned down, in make-up, brights are back, but with added dazzle and shimmer. It’s all to do with metallics and the reflection of light created by small pigments in powder eye-shadows, blushers and lip colours. Go Caribbean crazy with tropical shades such as apricot, yellow, magenta and turquoise and look for suitably sparkling words such as ‘chromagraphic’ (as in Mac Chromagraphic Pencils), ‘pigment’ and ‘metallic’ to make sure you get the digital dazzle. Nails may be matte but your face must sparkle.

Spring beauty tips are all about getting your skin in good condition for the big summer reveal. Start by buying a good facial scrub and use it at least once a week. Then look around for a new moisturiser. Come Spring, the weather won’t play havoc with your skin the way it did in the depths of winter, so look for something lighter than your heavy-duty winter creme.

In terms of Make-Up tips, here’s a great one - invest in an eye-brightening pencil liner. Choose one a few shades brighter than the colour of your eye lid - soft pinks, golds, nudes and whites work well on lighter skins. Use it in the inner rim of your eye and along the lash line - it will help the whites of your eyes to ‘pop’ and should help to mask redness or those tell tale ‘hangover eyes’.

Wedding beauty tips for 2013 don’t stray too far from the ‘stick with what you know’ formula - you don’t want to try out a new facial or laser treatment days before your big day and end up a blotchy-looking mess. One great tip for brides is to wear waterproof mascara - there’ll be a lot of crying. If false eyelashes are too fiddly for you, invest in eyelash extensions - they can last for a month or so and will see you through the honeymoon too.

A new make-up collection for the new season means having to organise and store your new pieces in your Sliderobes dressing table so buy small see-through plastic boxes (you can pick them up in large DIY stores) and divide your make-up amongst them, so all your lipsticks are in one box and eye shadows in another etc. Then stack or store them in your dressing table drawers, out of sight but not out of mind. It’s a great way to keep your bedroom tidy and if you’re on the hunt for a certain piece of make-up you’ll know exactly where it is.
