When it comes to summer fashion trends, think pink. But not any shade of pink - no fuchsia, magenta or hot pinks please. This season it has to be perfectly pastel. From vintage-style frocks to smart separates, summer wear for women is all about sherbet shades that look good enough to eat - candyfloss pink, baby blue, soft mint, buttercup and lilac.
The candy colour craze isn’t just for pre-teens, as women of all ages suit these ice cream tones. And just because the shades are subtle it doesn’t mean that you won’t stand out from the crowd.
You can even colour block to prove just how fashion-forward you are, and combine two trends in one. But if you don’t want to go for the head-to-toe look then stay within your comfort zone with one or two key items - a primrose-coloured blouse or a lilac handbag in soft leather will update your summer wardrobe with the minimum of effort.
Vintage shapes are also filling the shops this season, from 1940s-influenced pencil skirts to full-skirted ‘50s-style frocks and flirty peplum skirts, dresses and tops. The reason why everyone has gone wild for peplums (that short flared ruffle that sits at the waist of your outfit and skims out over the hips) is that it’s a flattering look for most shapes and sizes, even curvy ladies - after all, if you’ve got it, flaunt it.
Floral prints can provide a taste of the tropics with orchids and lilies or offer a hint of English country garden with roses and daisies. But with Peter Pan collars popping up on shift dresses and tops, and crop tops teamed with coloured denim (usually in, you’ve guessed it, pastel shades), the sugar-sweet feminine look can prove to be too saccharine for some.
If you’re not a fan of girly dressing, don’t worry. If sorbet shades set your teeth on edge, stark relief comes in the form of a trend towards more masculine tailoring. A pair of cigarette-leg trousers and a soft grey cashmere jumper over a white shirt with the top couple of buttons undone will give you an air of smart sophistication - think of Katharine Hepburn in her silver screen heyday. If you still yearn for pattern, then opt for a tribal print in earthy reds, golds, ochre and black or a futuristic digital print in metallic.
