Every style reflects an era of history; each represents a background of news, politics and fashion icons that shape and mould hemlines and accessories.
While current trends appear to be cutting edge, many borrow from the past to reinvent the future. Whether you go for vintage or a modern take on old designs, the styles lurking in your wardrobe can reveal your body shape and the time era that suits you the most. Even with labels removed, your favourite outfits give away your curves, height and best assets.
Whether it’s a conscious decision or something buried in the depths of your wardrobe, a lot of our fashion choices are based on nostalgia.
The festival surge has brought back vintage with a vengeance. Tickets in hand, tent under arm and it’s time to break out the party clothes. Floaty, flowery maxi dresses, rock and roll t-shirts and eclectic leggings are one size fits all and may rule the festival fields, but these fashions capture a summer moment rather than dictate an all-year attire.
If your body is athletic and toned and you can handle the big hairstyle, chances are you favour the 80s. It helps to have long legs to stretch out in skinny jeans and high heels to set them off.
The 70s were a toned down shadow of the 60s but only free-spirited women can still pull off the coloured patterns, oversized bangles and bulky necklaces. This style tends to suit tall women with long hair and a golden tan. It’s a dead give-away that you’re a fan of this era if you have a kaftan hanging in your wardrobe.
Everyone remembers the tumultuous 60s and these designs fluctuated from sexy mini-skirts to sleeveless tunics. But at least you don’t need long legs or a large chest to suit the style. And those over-sized 60s sunglasses can cover a multitude of sins.
The 50s reflect the glamorous Hollywood movie stars. Most were voluptuous and confident enough to show off hourglass figures with this prim and proper style. A girl always looks pretty in pink when they are wearing tight skirts and matching jumpers.
It was either pleated tea dresses or pencil skirts accented with vivid red lipstick in the 40s. This style tends to attract the eclectic woman who loves to show off her sexy curves and calves.
The first trick is not to fall into a style rut. If your wardrobe is looking too nostalgic, mix and match clothes and colours, get creative with accessories or fill your wardrobe with fashions that suit your figure and budget.
The second trick is to keep it all organised. Life is too short have to dig deep into the contents of your wardrobe looking for what goes with what, or forgetting what you have. With Sliderobes, everything is exactly where it should be...right at your fingertips.
